A female mantis lays groups of 14-100 babies in a froth that hardens to protect the egg through the Winter. This is known as an ootheca. Baby mantids, called nymphs, hatch in the spring. Often their first meal is one of their siblings!

There are two reasons why you might sometimes crack open an egg to reveal two yolks: it could have either been laid by a very young hen (whose egg production cycle isn’t synchronized yet) or a very old hen (which produces very big eggs).

An egg’s shell color has nothing to do with it’s nutritional quality; it indicates the breed of hen that laid it. Hens with white feathers (usually) lay white eggs, and hens with brown feathers lay brown eggs. Some hens like Araucanas even lay pale blue or green eggs. That’s not dye or something weird in their diet; that’s just the color eggs they lay.

The reason why lizards detest chicken eggs is because chicken eggs have sulphur in their shells, and sulphur is harmful to lizards. So when they smell the sulphur, they will stay away from the eggs.
